Prominently sited on a 4± acre scenic knoll and surrounded by a multitude of gardens as well as water on two sides, the centrally located Dark Harbor House is a stunning example of Colonial Revival architecture. Designed by Fred Savage and built in 1885/86, the current owners commissioned a complete restorative renovation in 2011/12 starting with a new foundation and ending with top period furnishings and landscaping. A superb job by all involved lead to a stunning result.

The commanding historic residence features 196 feet of waterfront to the west on Ames Cove, including a gravel beach and a six-kayak storage rack with custom launch system providing access to excellent kayaking in the picturesque Gilkey Harbor. Overlooking the iconic Dark Harbor to the north, only 200 feet off its southern edge, the residence offers a close-up view of the harbor and further out, the open water of Penobscot Bay and North Haven to the east.

Islesboro is located three miles off the coast in Maine’s Penobscot Bay. The island readily accessed public car ferry, a 20-minute ride that runs nine times a day in the summer, or by private aircraft landing on the island’s 2400-ft. airstrip. The island’s renowned resort community developed at the turn of the twentieth century, with prominent families establishing the grand summer “cottages” that are the signature homes of the island’s shorefront today. Today Islesboro’s low-key summer community is composed of residents from around the world who appreciate the island’s beauty, privacy, and relaxed atmosphere. At about fourteen miles in length, the narrow island includes the villages of Pripet, Islesboro, and Dark Harbor. Located in some of the world’s best cruising grounds, the island offers public and private boating facilities, along with tennis courts and a private golf course. Nearby on the mainland, the midcoast towns of Camden, Rockport, Belfast and Rockland offers an outstanding array of shopping, fine dining, cultural, educational, and recreational opportunities.
