The property, known as Cherry Island, consisted of 200 acres of prime northern hardwood. For over 10 years, the former and current owners had attempted to organize a timber sale on the property, but had failed, due to the site's environmental sensitivity. The parcel was essentially landlocked, bordered on three sides by the Adirondack Forest Preserve, and Oseetah Lake on the fourth.
When LandVest was hired to administer a timber sale, we surveyed every possible means of removing the timber including: freezing a winter road across the lake; barging the wood across the lake during high water; and removal of the timber via helicopter. |

After analyzing all possibilities, it was determined that due to the high value of the saw-timber, and the operational impediments posed, helicopter removal was the most logical logging choice. Up to this point, helicopter logging had only been attempted on a handful of occasions within the park's boundaries, and its high costs and logistical implications created many outside skeptics.
Through working with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, and the Adirondack Park Agency, LandVest came up with a plan that met or exceeded all of the landowners' expectations. Using a helicopter to remove the timber would minimize residual stand damage, protect regeneration, maintain the integrity of the landowners' infrastructure, shield the environmentally sensitive areas, and provide the landowner with their desired financial return. |

The result was a success for all parties involved. In two weeks, all of the marked timber was felled and removed via helicopter - a process that would have taken eight weeks under normal conditions. The landowners' received full value for their timber from the Pomeroy Lumber Company, who was pleased to buy the wood.
The Carson Logging Company of Jacksonville, Oregon was also able to display their helicopter logging abilities in a new region of the country. In the end, it proved that innovative thinking and a teamwork approach are the best problem solving tools in providing solutions that benefit industry, private landowners, and the environment. |
